Namami Gange
Under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the “Namami Gange” project is being implemented in the state of Uttarakhand to restore the Ganga River to its original purity.
The primary objective of the Namami Gange project is to make the Ganga clean, pure, and continuously flowing once again, so that people can use its water for drinking, bathing, rituals, and spiritual purposes. It also aims to preserve the vanishing aquatic ecosystems and water bodies.
In this ambitious initiative of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, the Municipal Corporation Rishikesh (under the Urban Development Department) is an important executing agency.
The corporation, in coordination with other executing agencies, is carrying out activities on a war footing under the Namami Gange program. Public awareness campaigns are also being conducted to promote cleanliness, purity, and the uninterrupted flow of the Ganga River.
As part of the Namami Gange mission, with the support of the Municipal Corporation, the Peyjal Nigam (Drinking Water Department) is constructing two Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) at Lakad Ghat and Chandreshwar Nagar in Rishikesh.
Once completed, the open drains will be fully tapped, preventing contaminated water from entering the Ganga. The sewage will be pumped to the STPs, treated, and then reused for agricultural purposes.
Simultaneously, the Municipal Corporation is also working on the restoration of natural water sources, rediversion of the Ganga stream to Triveni Ghat, and revitalization of the historic Rambha River to develop it into a tourist attraction. In addition, efforts are being made to improve ghat facilities, maintain cleanliness, and create employment opportunities for local youth.
